Description
This offering is for a vintage Frederick Geiger Cautery Transformer. This particular model has been in production since 1913.
Perfect for the collector of vintage medical equipment
The device is marked on the dial "F. Geiger Phila." The case is marked "110 V 60 Cy" on the top edge, with "4 V. 100 A." on the bottom edge. The wooden case is in very nice condition but it does have a top split due to wood age. The handle and latch both work perfectly.
I see other periodic references to this piece as a Quack Medical device. As I see modern day cautery electronic tools, I'm not so sure this is a quack piece.
The medical practice or technique of cauterization is the burning of part of the body to remove or close off a part of it in a process called cautery, which destroys some tissue, in an attempt to mitigate damage, remove an undesired growth, or minimize other potential medical harmful possibilities such as infections, when antibiotics are not available. The practice was once widespread for treatment of wounds. Its utility before the advent of antibiotics was effective on several levels.
This is a 100Amp Machine! If you’re planning on powering this pup up…I strongly suggest you do your homework as you’re on your own as I have no idea how this properly or safely works. I lifted off the top and included a photo of the electrical guts. I see loose wires to the 4 posts on top which would have to be replaced. It's pretty dirty inside. I haven't touched -- will leave that to someone who knows about electronics.
Dimensions:
7.5" Wide x 7.5" Deep x 6" Tall
The device is quite heavy so USPS fixed rate Medium box will be most cost effective postage method.
The item listed is being sold as is, as pictured and as described to the best of my knowledge. If you have a question on an item prior to purchase, please ask. Remember, when buying vintage expect imperfections as these items have a history and have been in the possession of others. I try to list EVERY flaw which would be commented on something in an antique or vintage condition – this does not mean all imperfections resulting from normal wear & use require comment. My goal is to have no rude surprises upon receipt.
