This 20/17 Meter Half-Square Antenna can be viewed as a two 1/4 wave vertical array. With the feed-point in the top corner, no tuner is required for the selected band. Using a tuner, the antenna will also perform well on 17 Meters. The feed point is a plastic weather-resistant enclosure with a BNC Female connector. This configuration takes advantage of the points on the antenna where the current is highest and results in the precious low-angle radiation so useful for DX operation, without the need for a tower, rotor or beam.
The take-off angle, or vertical angle of radiation is very low, in the 15° to 20° range, depending on local earth conductivity. The Half-Square antenna is a great wire antenna for the DX edge.
This Half Square antenna is a wire antenna with two vertical elements spaced one half-wave apart and fed in phase. One ¼ wave short vertical element is fed at the top, near the BNC female attachment. The other ¼ wave vertical element is attached to a horizontal half-wave phasing line. This will produce a bidirectional radiation pattern with almost an S unit of gain compared to a dipole. The antenna is nearly a direct match for 50-ohms system so there is no need for matching unit, but a coax coil or choke is recommended.
Designed for portable use, this half-square is full wave in length divided into three sections. The first is a half-wave phase line of approximately 34 feet long. The second is a quarter wave vertical section, approximately 17 feet, perpendicular to the horizontal phase line. The third is another approximately 17-foot vertical section at the opposite end of the horizontal line. Two PVC/resin counterweights attach to the bottom of the vertical sections. The antenna collapses as shown, comes in a 9” x 7” camouflage travel bag and weighs a total of approximately 10 ounces. The wire used is 22 AWG UL 1007 stranded wire which makes this antenna light, portable, flexible and easy to setup. Two attachment points are used, one at each end of the phase line (see diagram), so setup is very much like that of a standard dipole.
