Description
Madder root is used as a natural colorant that will produce shades of red to orange. It is harvested from the first-year roots of a climbing vine related to the coffee plant. The herb is xerophytic (highly drought-resistant). It has been used for centuries to produce a red dye to color wool, cotton, leather & other textiles. Depending on the mordant used to extract and fix the dye, various shades can be obtained. The root has been used to dye cloth and wool for centuries, with evidence found in ancient archaeological digging sites. It's also widely used in England as a classic addition to medieval-style English garden. The 17th century English botanist Nicholas Culpeper wrote that madder has affinity with the red planet & blood, recommended for “burstings.” It also became the dye source for the scarlet-colored coatees worn by the British redcoats.
