    Description

"WASPS--WOMEN AIRFORCE SERVICE PILOTS" is an extremely comprehensive reference on WWII WASPS! The WASPs, and their more experienced sisters in the Women's Auxiliary Ferrying Squadron (WAFS), were the first women to fly for the U.S. military. They were young and in love with flying and were given a unique opportunity to fly America's hottest aircraft in dozens of non-combat roles. More than 25,000 women applied to become WASPs, 1830 were accepted for training, and 1074 won their wings. They ferried planes from factories, test-flew repaired aircraft, and towed gunnery targets. It was an adventure of a lifetime! Here are personal stories of the women who were WASPs! Chapter titles are: 1. Here's Looking at You Kid (Reminiscing with the Fly Girls of WWII), 2. Yankee Doodle Pilots (Wheeling and Dealing to Start a Women's Flying Program), 3. We Were Only Fooling (Two visionaries: Jackie Cochran and Nancy Love), 4. Gee Mom, I Want to Go Hiome (Daily life of WASP Trainees), 5. I'm a Flying Wreck (WASPs Get Wings and Fly for Their Country), 6. Rugged But Right (The Author's Favorite WASP Stories), 7. Goin' Back to Where I Come From (The WASPs are Disbanded and Go On With Their Lives), 8. Buckle Down Fifinella (One Last Mission: Military Recognition). Candid shots during training are here! TONS of personal photos are here! ON THE FRONT COVER SEEN BELOW: WASPs trained to ferry B-17s--Francis (Green) Karl, Class 43-W-5; Margaret (Kirchner) Stevenson, Ann (Waldner) Currier, and Blanche (Osborn) Bross of Class 43-W-6.
